Presentation The Experience of ARFID: How to parent and treat a child with sensory superpowers

This presentation takes a developmental perspective and examines the various life experiences that can interfere with a child’s capacity to find food safe and pleasurable. We will explore how to “start over” creating a context in which a child feels safe in their own bodies and how parents can facilitate this exploration. One aspect of this experience is the emotion of disgust, an emotion designed to protect us from pathogens and one that is challenging to diminish. We will explore how creating a context of playful curiosity is key to managing this fascinating emotional experience.
